- Promote environmental stewardship
- Provide research-based information and education in home horticulture
- The continued education and development of committed volunteers.

Sequatchie Valley Master Gardener Community Garden – Guidelines
If accepted as a gardener, I will abide by the following policies, terms, and conditions.
- I use this garden at the sole discretion of the Sequatchie Valley Master Gardener’s Community Garden. I agree to abide by its policies and practices.
- The fee for the use of the garden is $10 per plot, per year, per household and is due on or before February 15th.
- I will only plant in the plot assigned to my name by the Garden Coordinator.
- I will have some activity in my plot by May 1st or I may be considered in violation of rules and have to forfeit my plot
- I will remove plant material and garden equipment from my plot by November 15th unless otherwise arranged with the Garden Coordinator
- I will notify the Garden Coordinator of my plans for insect and fungal control
- I will never use herbicides in the garden.
- I will not plant perennial or bi-annual plants, only annuals
- I will pick and remove ripe produce promptly to avoid theft and waste
- I will not take food or plants from other gardener’s plots. I will not take anything from the garden that is not rightfully mine
- I will put compostable materials only in the compost area
- My plot is 6 x 4 feet. I will not expand my plot beyond this measurement or into paths or other plots. I will keep all of my plants within the limits of my garden plot and will not allow any plants to grow more than 5 feet high. I must keep my plot free of weeds, pests and diseases.
- I will ensure the paths surrounding my plot will be free of debris
- I will respect the garden’s property, use shared equipment with care, return them to the shed promptly and store them neatly
- I will not plant any illegal plant. I will not smoke, drink alcoholic beverages, or use illegal drugs in the garden. I will not come to the garden while under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs.
- Guest and visitors, including children over the age of 5, may enter the garden only if I accompany them. They must follow all rules, terms, and conditions stated here. I will always supervise my children/guests when they are in the garden.
- I am solely responsible for the behavior of my children/guests. I will bear the cost of any damage caused by my children/guests.
- I will not make duplicate keys of any locks at the garden or give my key or lock combination to another person.
- I will respect other gardeners, and I will not use abusive or profane language or discriminate against others.
- I will not bring pets or other animals to the community garden

Q: What is the contract period for the application?
A: Unless otherwise agreed upon, the contract period is from March 1 through Dec 1
Q: Where do I submit my application for a plot and when is the fee due?
A: Applications along with the application fee can be turned into the UT Extension Office.
Q: How are plots assigned?
A: Plots will be assigned as they are applied and paid for.
Q: Who should gardeners contact if they encounter any operational problems?
A: Contact the Garden Coordinator.
Q: Who should gardeners contact if they encounter any insect or disease issues with their plots?
A: Contact the UT Extension office, Sheldon Barker, with questions.
Q: What should the Gardener do in the case of an extended absence?
A: Contact the Garden Coordinator.
Q: Will there be a trash receptacle that non-compostable materials and trash can be placed in?
A: There will not be a trash container on-site, but SVMGs will provide trash bags for use by the Gardeners. Gardeners will be expected to take the trash bag with them and dispose of it. Trash bags will be located in the storage shed.
Q: Where should we park?
A: You may park in the open grass area near the community garden plots.
Q: Are there restrooms on-site?
A: No restrooms are not provided on-site
