The Sequatchie Youth Leadership program was developed to teach leadership skills and develop an interest in leadership and community involvement.
Approximately 20 sophomores are chosen each year to participate in the Sequatchie Youth Leadership Program (SYL). The objectives of the program are for participants:
- To gain knowledge and appreciation of business, industry, government, and community leadership roles
- To discover their leadership style and understand how it can be used to promote their leadership skills
- To become confident in their abilities as a leader
- To become more involved as a leader in school and community activities
- To be more aware of the community and their roles and potential roles in the community
Also, as a part of the Sequatchie County Extension Youth Development program, SYL strives to develop life skills in the participants of the program. There are 10 Life Skills that are the focus of Extension programs. They are:
- Achieving goals
- Decision making
- Citizenship
- Responsibility
- Building Relationships
- Communicating
- Healthy lifestyles
- Leadership
- Self-esteem
- Teamwork
